The Global Governance Institute organized at the end of May its inaugural summer school on AI and Global Governance. Convened by GGI's Medlir Mema, with the assistance of Chris Lamont, the 5-day programme provided participants with the knowledge, skills, and practical understanding necessary to address the intricate issues surrounding global governance and related developments in the age of AI.

Participants who came from various European countries, the United States, and Central Asia were able to interact with leading academics, private sector specialists, and government officials, as they explored the significance of the EU AI Act as well as a number of topics, including AI and Ethics, Diplomacy, International Security, and Governance.

During on-site visits at the European External Action Services (EEAS) as well as with the NATO's Data and AI unit at the NATO headquarters in Brussels, participants learned first hand about the efforts made by the EU and NATO to harness the power of emerging technologies and to ensure that robust regulatory frameworks exist prior to the deployment of technologies in areas of development and the battlefield, respectively.

Following the overwhelmingly positive feedback at the conclusion of the programme, GGI will organize two additional AI-themed trainings in October 2024 and February 2025, dealing with the impact of emerging technologies on Global Development and Global Security.
